Nehemiah: Building What Matters

Barry's Bureau | Inspired by Dr. Richard Price's sermon at Schrader Lane Church of Christ

When Jerusalem's wall was finished, God's work was only half done, because the city was large but its people were few and spiritually depleted. In this Priceless Lesson from Nehemiah 7-8, Dr. Richard Price shows how God rebuilds His people through His Word as they gather, listen, understand, and respond with sorrow that turns into joy.

📖 1,222 words | ⏱️ 6 min read

Have you ever finished something big and still felt empty inside? The house is painted. The degree is framed. The promotion is official. Everyone says congratulations, yet somewhere beneath the success a quiet voice asks, "Is this all there is?"

Structures can be completed while souls remain unfinished. The walls of our lives can look strong while the people inside are still worn and spiritually hungry. That is exactly where we find Jerusalem after Nehemiah 6.

The Wall Was Finished, but the City Was Not

In this powerful message, Dr. Richard Price takes us into Nehemiah 7-8. The wall around Jerusalem has been completed in an astonishing fifty-two days (Nehemiah 6:15). Opposition failed. Distractions failed. God's people finished the work. But Nehemiah 7:4 adds a sobering detail:

"Now the city was large and spacious, but the people in it were few, and the houses were not rebuilt." (Nehemiah 7:4)

As Dr. Price explained, the structure had been restored, but the community still needed restoration. God was never merely interested in rebuilding Jerusalem's walls. God wanted to rebuild Jerusalem's people. And as Dr. Price reminds us, God does not rebuild people without introducing His Word.

Guard What God Has Built

First, Nehemiah appointed trustworthy leaders. He gave charge of Jerusalem to his brother Hanani and to Hananiah, because Hananiah "was a faithful man and feared God more than many" (Nehemiah 7:2). As Dr. Price observed, you have to know who can be trusted with what God has entrusted to you.

Then came an unusual instruction: "Do not let the gates of Jerusalem be opened until the sun is hot" (Nehemiah 7:3). Why wait? Because a finished wall does not mean the threat is gone. Nehemiah wanted enough light to see who was coming and going.

Dr. Price tied this to a principle found throughout Scripture: guard what God has entrusted to you (1 Timothy 6:20; 2 Timothy 1:14; 1 Corinthians 16:13). As Solomon wrote, "Keep your heart with all diligence, for out of it spring the issues of life" (Proverbs 4:23).

You cannot just celebrate what God has built. You must be faithful enough to protect it. That includes your family, your assignments, your faith, and the truth God has placed in you.

Four Ways God's Word Rebuilds His People

With the walls secured, the spotlight shifts from Nehemiah the wall builder to Ezra the priest and scribe. Dr. Price traced four movements in Nehemiah 8.

1. They Gathered with a Unified Purpose

"All the people gathered together as one man... and they told Ezra the scribe to bring the Book of the Law of Moses" (Nehemiah 8:1). Notice who called the meeting. Not the preachers. The people. They had gone so long without God's Word that they longed for it. As Dr. Price said, they were not hungry for an event; they were hungry for the Word of God. And when people become hungry for the Word, they move from merely coping with life to living it with wisdom.

2. They Gave the Word Their Attention

Ezra read from morning until midday, "and the ears of all the people were attentive to the Book of the Law" (Nehemiah 8:3). They had no Bible apps, no shelf of translations, no personal copies. A public reading was a rare and sacred moment, and they treated it that way. Dr. Price noted that Ezra stood on a wooden platform (Nehemiah 8:4), placing the proclaimed Word at the center.

We have more access to Scripture than perhaps any generation in history. So Dr. Price pressed the question home: we have access to the Word, but does the Word have access to us?

3. They Understood the Word

"So they read distinctly from the book, in the Law of God; and they gave the sense, and helped them to understand the reading" (Nehemiah 8:8). They did not merely recite; they explained. Dr. Price challenged us not to be more loyal to a particular translation than to the meaning of the inspired text. Reverence for God's Word grows out of understanding it. His test for any sermon? Ask the children whether they understood it.

4. They Responded to the Word

When the people understood, they wept (Nehemiah 8:9). The Word had become personal. It showed them where they had fallen short, just as all Scripture is profitable "for reproof, for correction" (2 Timothy 3:16). Dr. Price reminded us that tears in worship do not mean something is wrong. Sometimes they mean everything is finally right.

From Tears to the Table: The Joy of the Lord Is Your Strength

Yet God did not leave His people weeping. Nehemiah, Ezra, and the Levites told them to dry their eyes:

"Go your way, eat the fat, drink the sweet, and send portions to those for whom nothing is prepared; for this day is holy to our Lord. Do not sorrow, for the joy of the LORD is your strength." (Nehemiah 8:10)

So the people went away to "rejoice greatly, because they understood the words that were declared to them" (Nehemiah 8:12). Their celebration was rooted in understanding.

Here is the pattern Dr. Price wants us to see: godly sorrow leads to repentance, and repentance leads to celebration. If you have stood before a holy God and resolved to change your attitude, your language, or your posture at home, you are not meant to stay in guilt. God loves you too much to leave you wallowing in what He has already covered.

"The Word was never intended simply to occupy space on a page. The Word is supposed to occupy space within us."

5 Ways to Let God's Word Rebuild You This Week

  1. Come hungry. Before your next assembly or Bible class, pray for a genuine appetite for God's Word.
  2. Give it your attention. Silence your phone in worship and set aside unhurried time to read all of Nehemiah 8.
  3. Read for meaning. Compare a faithful translation with the one you love, and ask, "What did this mean to them, and what does it mean for me?"
  4. Guard what God has given. Name one blessing (family, an assignment, a truth) and take one step to protect it. Students, handle your business first.
  5. Move from tears to the table. After repentance, share a meal with loved ones (or by yourself) and thank God for His goodness.
