Hebrews : Anchored in Christ and the Warning Against Neglect
This lesson summarizes Hebrews Chapter 2, continuing the core theme established in Chapter 1 that Jesus is superior to angels. The primary purpose of the letter was to encourage early Christians facing severe persecution—which isolated them socially, economically, and religiously—not to abandon their faith by reverting to Judaism. The chapter introduces the first of five warnings in Hebrews, urging readers to pay close attention to the gospel they received, lest they slowly drift away from the faith. The author asks how they shall escape if they ignore such great salvation, noting that past violations received just punishment, and affirming that sin always leads to death, either immediately or later, and always spiritually as separation from God. This great salvation, defined as deliverance from the power of sin and death through Christ, was first announced by the Lord and confirmed by eyewitnesses, with God testifying to it through signs, wonders, miracles, and Spirit-gifts. To avoid drifting, believers must stay anchored in Christ through devotion, study, and prayer, recognizing that modern minor and secondary preoccupations can easily preempt the development of faith.
