The Bread That Never Runs Out: Pursuing Jesus for the Right Reasons
In this lesson, teacher Tony Padgett walks us through John 6:15–40, where Jesus performs a second stunning miracle—walking on the sea—and then confronts a crowd whose hunger for physical provision has blinded them to something far greater. After feeding five thousand people, the multitude tracks Jesus down, not because they grasped the spiritual significance of the miracle, but because they wanted more bread. Jesus cuts through their materialistic expectations with a penetrating challenge: "Do not labor for the food that perishes, but for the food that endures to eternal life" (John 6:27). When the crowd asks what work God requires, Jesus startles them with a simple but weighty answer—belief—reminding us that genuine faith is not passive agreement but an active, costly commitment of the whole self. Declaring Himself the Bread of Life (John 6:35), Jesus promises that all who come to Him and believe will be raised up on the last day, offering eternal life that no earthly supply can match. This lesson challenges every believer to examine what they truly seek when they come to God and to hunger above all else for the One who alone satisfies the soul.
