When Healing Is Not Enough: The Sabbath, the Son, and a War That Had to Happen
In John 5:11–18, teacher Tony Padgett brings us face to face with a stunning moment: a man healed after 38 years of paralysis — a bona fide miracle — yet the religious leaders of Jerusalem fixate entirely on the fact that he carried his mat on the Sabbath. Their obsession with minutia over miracle exposes a spiritual blindness that is as dangerous today as it was then. When Jesus tells the man, "Sin no more, lest something worse happen to you," He connects physical suffering to moral accountability and calls every believer to pursue a life that is constantly moving away from sin. The real earthquake, however, comes in verse 17: "My Father is working until now, and I am working" — seven words that set the Pharisees on a course toward the cross, because in claiming God as His own Father, Jesus was declaring Himself equal with God. This lesson challenges us to examine whether we, like the religious leaders, are so focused on our own religious systems that we miss the living Son of God standing right in front of us.
