When the Bread of Life Offends: Faith, Flesh, and the Cost of Following Jesus

In John 6:41–70, Jesus doubles down on His most provocative claim yet — that He is the living bread that came down from heaven — and the opposition is immediate, coming from people who knew His earthly parents and could not reconcile that familiarity with a claim of divine origin. Jesus does not retreat; He clarifies that people come to Him not by accident or human decision alone, but because the Father draws them — primarily through His Word and through the lives of faithful believers who lift up Christ in how they live and teach. The lesson then moves into one of the most misunderstood passages in all of Scripture: Jesus' declaration that those who eat His flesh and drink His blood will have eternal life — language that scandalized the crowd but points unmistakably forward to the cross and the Lord's Supper. As the hard saying thins the crowd and many disciples turn back, Jesus turns to the Twelve with the same penetrating question: "Will you also go away?" — and Peter's great confession rings out: "Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life." This lesson challenges every believer to move beyond the shallow Christianity of a weekly spiritual snack and feed daily on Christ as the true, sustaining bread for the eternal life He alone can give.
