The Four Witnesses: Confronting Unbelief with Unshakeable Truth
In this pivotal session covering John 5:24–47, Tony Padgett leads us through Jesus' confrontation with His opponents, anchored in the staggering promise of verse 24 — that everyone who hears His word and believes in the Father who sent Him has already passed from death to life and possesses eternal life. Rather than simply asserting His identity, Jesus presents four legally and spiritually compelling witnesses: John the Baptist, who proclaimed Him the Lamb of God; God the Father, who spoke from heaven at His baptism and transfiguration; His miraculous works, which no sorcerer could duplicate; and the Scriptures themselves, including Moses and the prophets, who foretold His coming in hundreds of fulfilled prophecies. The lesson draws a sharp distinction between the spiritual resurrection available to believers now — hearing the voice of the Son of God and living — and the future physical resurrection on the last day, when all in the tombs will rise either to life or to judgment. We are soberly warned against cognitive dissonance — knowing the truth intellectually yet refusing to surrender to it, often because of tradition, social pressure, or the fear of losing standing among men. Moses himself pointed forward to Christ, yet those who claimed Moses as their champion refused to come to the very One he testified about. This lesson is an urgent call to move from head knowledge to heart obedience — to know God not as a last resort or a convenience, but as Lord — and to obey the gospel before the day of reckoning arrives.
